SNP/Lib Council’s Rubbish

9 July 2009

Was out campaigning last night and witnessed the true extent of the Bin men’s “work to rule” policy.

This pic represents what happens when the bin men just do their hours. Imagine what’s going to happen when they go on strike because of the incompetence of this Edinburgh Council administration?

This isn’t just a protestation at “an unsightly mess” – this is a health hazard. It stinks and the streets I was in last night were plagued by flocks of seagulls dive bombing over flowing bin bags for scraps.

The Lib Dem’s Gordon McKenzie appears to be in charge and there’s little sense of urgency in his response to this BBC Coverage

I’m fully behind the bin men on this one. Would you take a three year pay freeze followed by a £6000 pay cut quietly? Get back around the table Mr McKenzie, demonstrate some political leadership for the first time in this adminstration’s life and come up with a Plan B.

You should see the state of the New Town this evening - because we don't have those huge (and ugly) communal bins in the world heritage zone we still leave bin bags on the street - which is OK when they are getting collected quickly.

However, the birds, foxes and local yobs seem to have had some extra time to empty the bags all over the streets.... The bins were eventually collected this afternoon, but sadly the mess remains. Everywhere.

So yes, plan B is urgently needed.

The situation is not helped by the idiocy of some - in fact many - of our fellow residents.

We have separate, special recycling containers for paper and packaging, yes?

So, we separate the stuff out and mooch round to the recycling bin. Oh dear, it's full and hasn't been emptied.

There are then two choices:

a) put the stuff in the ordinary container (correct)

b) leave the stuff on the pavement next to the recycling container, in the vague, existential hope that something will happen to it, other than it being blown around and pecked open by the gulls.

Observation suggests that well over 50% of the population of Edinburgh go for (b).

No wonder the Nats win elections.

Reminiscent of a Westminster labour government under labour back in the 70s.

I don't think I fully appreciated just how manky Edinburgh is at the moment till I read this post and noticed it more. Almost every bin is overflowing wherever one goes.

The place is a dump. Not sure who is to blame but I 100% agree it needs sorted out pronto.

That picture could be in any one of numerous spots in Glasgow even when the Labour Council's binmen are working, I use that term loosely.
